Dextrose Gel for Neonatal Hypoglycaemia

Dextrose Gel for treatment of Neonatal and Infant Hypoglycaemia

Destrogel is a dextrose gel for management of neonatal hypoglycaemia, supplied in convenient 2ml single dose ampoules.

Clinical Background

Neonatal hypoglycaemia affects around 15% of the total neonatal population, with much higher prevalence in at-risk groups; this includes pre-term and low birth-weight babies and those with diabetic mothers1. If untreated the condition can have devastating effects on the infant1,2.

It has been established that the use of oral dextrose solution has an important part to play in the management of neonatal hypoglycaemia, reducing the incidence of treatment failure1. Oral administration reduces the need for mother-infant separation, increasing the chance of exclusive breast-feeding2 and is a simple, low cost option, particularly for early management of at-risk babies1.

Product Information

Destrogel is 40% Dextrose gel which is designed specifically for dietary treatment of neonatal hypoglycaemia. It is gluten and lactose free, intended for oral administration and most effective by buccal application.

The dextrose gel comes in single dose 2ml ampoules for convenience and to avoid waste; the ampoule is designed to make administration easy.  Product is supplied in a box containing 200 ampoules in sealed pouches of 5.
